Your data. Your keys.
Your recovery.

CONTROL THAT GOES BEYOND THE CLOUD

A backup you can keep.
A recovery you control.

Your business records should remain accessible on your terms. Download an encrypted recovery package and keep it on an external drive, in your own archive or with your organisation’s other disaster-recovery materials.

With the complete package, matching private recovery key and recovery software saved locally, you can verify and recover the data without signing in, contacting our servers or relying on our hosting infrastructure.

YOUR INDEPENDENT RECOVERY KIT

Everything you need, under your control.

  • Your encrypted backup package
  • Your private recovery key and its password
  • The recovery point’s verification key
  • Recovery Desktop for Windows or Mac
  • Your recovered files and data catalogue
FROM YOUR WORKSPACE TO YOUR OWN ARCHIVE

Four steps to independent recovery.

Set up your customer-controlled key in Company Settings → Backup. Then create an offline copy from an available recovery point.

01

Create your recovery key

Use Recovery Desktop to create a password-protected key pair on your computer. Register the public key with your company. Keep the private key and password securely under your control.

02

Prepare your backup

Choose an eligible recovery point protected by your registered key and request its download. Preparation runs in the background. The interface shows when it is ready, and the person requesting it receives an email.

03

Take it offline

Download the complete encrypted package, its verification key and the recovery software. Store them in your own archive, with the private recovery key and password protected separately.

04

Recover on your computer

Open the package in Recovery Desktop, select your private key and choose a destination. Verify the backup and decrypt the recoverable files and catalogue locally, without a connection to We Secure Data.

MORE THAN A FOLDER OF DOWNLOADS

Keep your files.
Keep the context around them.

Each recovery package represents your organisation’s data at the selected recovery point. Encrypted file content travels with a recovery catalogue and signed manifest, so your archive retains both the data and the information needed to understand and verify it.

Your business files

Recover the file content included in the selected snapshot, including retained file versions associated with your messages, Vaults and File Drop workflows.

Your recovery catalogue

Keep the exported company records and file references alongside the recovered content. The catalogue preserves the context of your organisation’s backed-up data.

Your integrity evidence

Signed manifests and file integrity checks help you verify the package and detect changed or incomplete data before relying on a recovery.

ENCRYPTED IN THE ARCHIVE. UNLOCKED BY YOU.

The private key stays with your business.

Only your public recovery key is registered with the platform. Your private recovery key and its password are used locally by the recovery app to unlock the downloaded backup.

Keep the matching keys for every backup you retain. If particular files use additional customer-exclusive or paper keys, retain those keys too.

MAKE RECOVERY PART OF YOUR ROUTINE

Download. Verify. Store. Repeat.

Refresh your offline archive regularly and test opening a backup before you need it. Keep a separate copy of your recovery materials and a written recovery procedure your authorised team can follow.

HOSTED RECOVERY AND YOUR OWN OFFLINE ARCHIVE

14 days in the platform.
Your own retention offline.

The hosted platform provides a rolling 14-day file recovery window. Independent backup lets Business customers take a recovery point out of that hosted window and keep their own downloaded copy for as long as their organisation requires.

Once downloaded, that complete package stays in your own storage. Its offline recovery does not depend on the recovery point remaining available on our servers.

Which plans include independent backup?

Independent backup and customer-controlled offline recovery are included with the Business plan. Starter and Professional do not include this option. Compare the plans.

Can I recover if We Secure Data is unavailable?

Yes. Save the complete encrypted package, matching private key, password, verification key and recovery software before you need them. You can then verify and recover the package locally without access to the We Secure Data service.

How do I get started?

A company owner on the Business plan can open Company Settings → Backup to set up customer-controlled recovery. Download Recovery Desktop from your signed-in account, create and register your public recovery key, then prepare a package from a recovery point protected by that key.

Can I keep my own backups for longer than 14 days?

Yes. The 14-day policy applies to recovery points held by the hosted service. You control how long downloaded packages remain in your offline archive. Keep the matching recovery keys and software for as long as you keep the packages.

INCLUDED WITH BUSINESS

CONCEPTUAL DIAGRAM · INDEPENDENT RECOVERY

Hold the recovery material independently.

  1. Retain a usable encrypted recovery package outside the running service.

  2. Keep the matching private recovery key under your organisation’s control.

  3. Use Recovery Desktop on Windows or Mac to restore supported content offline. Test recovery before you need it.

Signing keys and recovery keys do different jobs.

Company provenance keys sign message and file evidence. Your customer-controlled private recovery key unlocks applicable backup packages, while the package’s verification key checks its authenticity. Keep the complete downloaded materials and matching keys; these keys are not interchangeable.
